Transcendental Sounds
Transcendental sounds are vibrations that do not have a material quality. They are descending from the spiritual plane via the disciplic succession. They are classified as Mantras and can be chanted individual or collectively.
Individual they are referred to as bhajans and collective chanting the vedas describe  as Sankirtan i.e. loud congressional chanting , of the lords holy names and pastimes , in the association of other devotees.
When the chanting of mantras is performed individually on beads it is known as japa. Japa can be chanted by pronouncing the mantra aloud so oneself can hear it,  it can be chanted softly and can be chanted by the mind. Mental chanting is a more advanced stage and is a very powerful process.
In this present age of Kali yuga the recommended method of self realization is  the chanting  the holy names of the lord. The lord has hundreds and millions of names and each of them have transcendental potency. They purify the chanter's mind and heart to the point that one can very easily associate with the supreme lord by devotion.
At a certain point one will serve the lord by glorifying his transcendental activities via the chanting process. Below are samples of glorification of the lord by the process of devotional chanting.

The Mahamantra
All the Sages, vedic scriptures and well wishers recommend the chanting of the Holy names of the Lord as revealed in the Mahamantra. The Mahamantra or great mantra of deliverance is embued with all the transcendental power of the supreme Lord and is in fact non different than the lord himself. It is he himself present in transcendental sound vibration.
