Devala
![]()
A great authority like Narada Muni and Vyasadeva. His good name is on the list of authorities mentioned in the Bhagavad-gita when Arjuna acknowledged Lord Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He met Maharaja Yudhisthira after the Battle of Kurukshetra, and he was the elder brother of Dhaumya, the priest of the Pandava family. Like the ksatriyas, he also allowed his daughter to select her own husband in a svayamvara meeting, and at that ceremony all the bachelor sons of the Rsis were invited.
The same Devala was mentioned as the spokesman of the book of Laws ( Dharmasastra ). He had been a disciple of Vedavyasa. The work Devala-Smrti is still available wherein he has made a provision for taking back those who get converted to an alien religion.
According to some, he is not Asita Devala a Vedic Rishi descendant of Kasyapa credited with having taught some of the hymns of the Vedas, particularly Rig-Veda.
