Srimati Yamuna Devi

Many great Vaishnava devotees have eulogized Yamunaji, which they understand as the mellow liquid of the spiritual principle, in their beautiful verses. She is honored because Sri Krishna played with the Gopas and Gopis in her clear, refreshing water and on her soft banks.

For the bhakta yogis  Yamunaji is more than just a river, she is a goddess and devotee of Sri Krishna, originating from the heart of the sun, descending over Mount Kalindi and then flowing down the Himalayas and through the plains towards Prayag where she joins the Ganges and the Saraswati. On her course she divides Vraja in a western and a eastern section and encloses Vrindavana on three sides. A bath in her purifying water, done in the spirit of devotion, destroys all accumulated karma and grants mystic union with Sri Krishna.

Yamunaji provides Vraja Mandala with her precious liquid, which is also daily fetched by the priests to be used in the temples and house-shrines for washing the Arca Vigraha of the Lord.

In the towns we find richly decorated Ghats (constructed bathing places) with a multitude of fine arches and flights of steps leading down to the river. Each one of them is associated with a particular Lila of Sri Krishna performed there. Among the many Ghats of Vraja the Keshi Ghat in Vrindavana possesses the most impressive size and architecture.

Before starting the Vraja-parikrama pilgrims take vows at Vishram Ghat in Mathura and after completing the circumambulation carry some holy water back to their homes for their families and friends.
